Aluminum Diaphragm in Type AT Reproducer

Post by JohnM »

Bought a low-trunnion Type AT Graphophone yesterday and it has an aluminum diaphragm. Before I dismiss this as someone’s hack repair job, has anyone ever seen an aluminum diaphragm in a floating reproducer before? The diaphragm appears to be quite old. I haven’t disassembled the reproducer yet.

Many years ago I had a floating reproducer (I can't remember which style) with an aluminum diaphragm. It had the same problem, where the needle bar did not "stick" well to the diaphragm. I tried Super Glue as a last resort, and it worked for a little while. I assumed it was a later replacement, and so, replaced it with mica and glued the needle bar on with varnish. It stayed together after that.
