We're generally honorable folks here, but there are many others who are lurking on the periphery who might not share the sentiment of "first come..."

That being said, don't be too discouraged, it's happened to all of us at one time or another. :)

Best,

Yeah, I need to be a little more discreet next time. Such a shame. It was really close to me too. It will be a long time the next time something this nice shows up in my area again. :(

This is also where books come in handy so you can make a informed decision on a purchase and not go so public. As Fran said, there are very good folks on here. However, there are also many more that just sit and watch on the edge.....that may also include the CL seller.

Now you have some money to use on books.... ;).

Wait a second, did I miss something? Where did we ascertain that the other buyer came into the picture due to the discussion here on the forum? AmbAndy's location doesn't show, and he didn't share the CL link that I can see.

No harm in asking questions here, especially newbies and folks who don't have access to the books. Not hard to keep things vague enough to "protect" against piracy, either.

But is that what happened here? I don't think so, but let me know if I'm confused on that.

Lesson learned. I have a couple of books but I didn’t have them near me at the moment. Good to know I’m not alone with this type of situation. Oh well. I’ll try to be more cautious next time.

I have to agree again with Peter, I don't see how / where you really "gave anything up". While it's possible someone else may have also seen the ad and seen the thread here, I kind of doubt that. That said, being burned by sneaky people in this little "hobby" happens more often than you might think. A machine has never been worth losing a friendship over to me, so I've never been able to understand the greed that takes over some folks. Sorry that happened to you, it's happened to most of us, certainly more than once to me.

Oh well. It was one of those “too good to be true” kinda things. I guess I’ll pick my feet up and move on...I’m not the first one this has happened to and I’ll certainly won’t be the last.

I could be wrong, but I don't think posting it here gave it away. More likely, the seller did a little more research and figured his asking price was on the low end. Ask yourself these questions:

1. Why would anyone offer $550 for something that the seller was asking $300 or $350 for?

2. Assuming the person in Question 1 existed, why on Earth would anyone turn down a higher-than-asking offer and try to start a "bidding war"?

I personally think this seller is someone who has been watching too many reality tv shows. Move on - you're better off not dealing with someone like that.

Good points... will be interesting to see if it ends up getting relisted at the higher price

Apparently the person who offered the $550 was an “antique dealer” in a nearby town. I’ve bought a few phonos from the antique stores in that town. My VV-50, VV-XI, Amberola 30, and Edison Standard B all came from one shop there. So If the antique dealer gets the machine I wonder if it will show up at one of the antique stores I visit from time to time?

I've been around enough antique dealers for the last 40+ years to say rather safely that a "higher offer" than this seller's asking price is nothing more than a BS story by the seller. An antique dealer is just that, a dealer. They're looking to maximize profits, think about this for a second. Let's say you had a car for sale privately but advertised. You have a listed price in mind of say $6500 for your used but not abused Toyota knowing it books a little higher. What do you think your chances of a buyer coming along and telling you they want to pay you blue book value because they're a dealer? That's what I thought. Sorry, Andy, your seller is full of it...
