I wonder how many people broke their mainsprings using one of those things? Since you can’t feel how tight the spring is getting. How do you know when to stop?

If you hate winding your phonographs, you're in the wrong hobby

Some times I wind and other times I use and old electric portable. Depends on my mood. I do even at 66 have a lot of energy and this helps me get rid of it. But when I would bring hone say 80 new records I would bring out the electric and after wiping them down with a damp cloth and they dry I'd play them on the electric. But whatever winds up turns me on or is it whatever turns me on winds me up! Neil

That's why I play most of my 78s and DD's on my 1928 Edison C-2, or my 1929 Victrola 8-9X. Got to wind the Amberola 1A though. Marc

I am curious what is the price range of these electric winding devices and how easily are they found? How does one accommodate the various crank interfaces?

I’ve been pretty lucky in finding them, either loose or installed, or on eBay. The connecting shaft is easy to make, although a crank must give its life to do so. You cut the threaded part of the shaft to the right length, then file a flat spot on the non-threaded end to fit into the Motrola gear housing. The other part you can make from a piece of sheet metal and a bolt.

Easy peasy!
