I am working on an early Victor VIII motor. At the very least the springs need to be cleaned. As you can see in the picture, I have access to one of the two springs. The other spring seems to be sealed. How do you get to the spring? Can you?
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'll bet if you hold it gear side down and thwack the side of the casing a few times with a block of wood the cover will drop into your hand and expose the spring

Re: Victor VIII sealed spring barrel-need HELP
My brother made me a custom tool for these. It's a chunk of antique copper telephone line that's been pounded into a hook--stick the hook end into the center and POP goes the cover.
You only need one of those hooks for the early Victor motors, the old horn-model and early tabletop Victrola type. If you are working on a later Victrola it's a lot easier.

Re: Victor VIII sealed spring barrel-need HELP
SUCCESS
I soaked the barrel in a solvent overnight. That helped a lot. The grease was about the consistency of cement. With some strategic taps the lid came off.
Thanks for your advice.
