I also have an early model Columbia BC. Mine is in the ornate (Columbia GG Grand Graphophone) cabinet. I've always enjoyed watching Reid Welch's video explaining his restoration of the Higham reproducer components on his Columbia BC here:

Reid is an excellent speaker and does a nice job of explaining how he made a replacement for the original amber wheel and the friction shoe. The first 45 seconds feature still images and then he opens the audio. He concludes the video with a demonstration play of his Columbia BC. These Higham reproducers are usually a real challenge to get sounding as they did when new.
