Even the normally excellent and highly acclaimed BBC TV series "The Repair Shop" sometimes gets things wrong.

The episode broadcast on 29th April included the "restoration" of an Edison Opera. Watch it if you can, and weep  .

The Music Master horn was chemically stripped to bare wood, and refinished in a shade which did not match the case, which was left as found. The neck was painted black and re-attached to the bell with glue, no attempt being made to replace the missing brass ferrule.

On completion the sound quality was just as bad as when the machine was brought in. Wow, flutter and playing much too fast. The out of round cylinder played was a tenor singing Gilbert and Sullivan, but he sounded more like one of the Chipmunks :? .

As if the treatment of the Opera was not bad enough, any non collector watching might assume that this is what one is supposed to sound like.

Putting the tone arm on the wrong side is a pet peeve of mine! It's a good thing that it's not a Victor "V"series or Paramount that's being wrecked! edisonplayer

She seems like a tough lady but not that invested. I was getting a Brunswick vibe too, but I think it's another generic off-brand.(I do like the grill.)

This guy does a great restoration of an Edison Standard B. But it appears to be a 2 minute only machine with a Diamond B reproducer and a horizontal carriage for some reason. :?: The guy who made the video isn't the owner of the machine he's restoring it for someone else.

I particularly like the way the sound box is scratched across the grooves when she picks it up at the end of the record. Perfect end to a very "instructional" video
I am interested in all forms of audio media including: gramophones, phonographs, wire recorders, the tefifon, reel to reel tapes, radiograms and radios.

While this museum is playing the correct record on the correct machine, they are using the lateral adapter to play their diamond discs.
