The sides of the lid are solid oak.

The mystery is solved here.. The back is the correct Veneer. The side that is showing with the handle has been Re-veneered using replacement veneer. That is why the veneer does not match. Also , If you look at the handle. The Handle Escutcheon Plate is missing along with its two round slotted roundhead screws.. See pics below of a correct machine below...
