Martinola, could you post the link to your thread about japanning?

I also found this link today from Antique Radio Forum about japanning and using old 78s in lieu of asphaltum.

For an asphaltum substitute, try Rustolium appliance epoxy.
If you do a google image search you will pull up posts by AFCA members discussing this and you can see how it looks.
You can lay this paint on fairly thick, hiding the rough casting surfaces just like the original japan did.

Has anyone tried zinsser shellac for refinishing? How does it compare to using orange shellac flakes from APSCO?

Thanks
Martin

I have used canned shellac a few times. It behaved as well as making your own from flakes. It's heavier than I can work with so I always cut it with alcohol.
You have to check the date on the can. If it is over a year old it can have drying problems which are a PITA for sanding!

Follow up question:

do you think garnet shellac too dark for the Amberola 30?

I have used Zinsser on all of my restorations. As has been said, you have to be careful to let the coats harden up before sanding or polishing. I have used the APSCO flakes to sit on the shelf in case I suddenly get other than lazy. (They've been sitting there since 1999.)

I use the Amber to get the color I want, and use the "clear" to build up the finish.

Martin
