Why do I need to change needles ?

Remember, you are talking to a guy who is dumb as dirt when I comes to gramophones ... this is my first one ... and for that matter, the first one I have ever seen in person.

I bought 400 needles because I was told to change the needle every time I play a record ... buy why?

Does the plastic (or what ever material these records are made of) really wear out the needle?

What happens if you don't change the needle .. will it kill the records?

Thanks!

The material of a 78 RPM record is a mix or resin and a mineral filler 25%/ 80% and the filler is abrasive with a percentage of silica or similar and it is this that forms the shape of the needle in the groove and wears it down by the end . The needle then has a couple of flat surface on that will damage the next record and besides will sound bad as well.

And yes it will damage the record.

How do you join the "other" forum? Is there a secret code known only to those who attend APS / CAPS meetings in person? I ask as I applied to join a week or so ago but have never received "approval".

I am still on the steep learning curve.

I didn't know how many forums or FB groups there were.

I was not even sure who sold parts of for that matter where to find them.

So but sure getting the hang of this.
