Correct name for sound / tone arm ?

Hey!

Well I am almost done with my first Victrola.

Just need to replace a few temporary repairs I made to the motor (like replacing the nail I used with the correct pin) and I can put it in the living room.

Question, what is the correct term for the small arm that the reproducer connects to ... just before the large "tone" arm ?

I wanted to put up a post and also ask a few vendors if they have one that is in good shape but didn't know the correct name for it.

Mine had some black material eat into it just after the reproducer. It ate right through the gold finish and even a bit into the copper.

As the unit turned out so well, I figure I would ask around and see if anyone had one that was in good shape (also still looking for the correct motor board screws and maybe a lock since mine will not open or close with the "V" key I have ... or maybe it is the key, something else to look into). I wanted to know the correct name of the part to ask for.

IIRC Victor literature refers to this small part as the gooseneck, and the large part of the tonearm as the taper tube.

Yours is in very nice shape. Great job on the restoration of a good-quality machine.

I am very happy with the way it worked out.

I didn't want to redo the cabinet but just freshen it up.

A good cleaning wit GoJo (internet tip) ... rinse ... quick once over with Restor-a-finish just to cover up the white wood showing the dents and dings ... two coats of wax.

Could you imagine, if I didn't take it, it may have ended up in the dump!

Best of all to me, it really sounds great! I followed all the videos ... carefully rebuilt the reproducer ... I was amazed!

It's surprising the well these machines can sing when restored. We're used to see them in films or in flea markets, but the real thing is much more exciting, isn't true?

That slight bit of plating loss on the u-tube is really very minimal. It would be tough finding one much better. Nice work!

There is ample evidence and we all agree that the Victor called the long part “Taper Tube”

However, I could find no reference to “gooseneck” in the Victor Parts Listing or any of the many Victor Owners booklets that I checked. Van Eps, could you please cite your source? I’d like to add it to my knowledge base.

The Victor parts listing consistently uses S.B. Crook or Sound Box Crook
The owners manuals use the terms Sound Box Tube or Sound Box Crook

Jerry, can you tell us your source also? I suspect U-tube is an unofficial name or one made up by collectors since the tube is in fact U-shaped.
