Leona Williams, blues from 1922

Post by jboger »

Just had a pleasant surprise:

I'm sorting through hundreds of 78s. Amidst all the Gene Autry, Vernon Dalhart, Uncle Josh, Guy Lombardo, and a host of others, I found a Columbia record by Leona Williams with two song, Decatur Blues and Cruel Daddy Blues. I'd grade it a G+.

I had never heard of her. I of course did an Internet search. I turned up a Leona Williams who sings (currently--she's still alive) Country. Can't be her, can it? So I went to the on-line 78 data base and found I have a 1922 recording. Now that makes sense.

Jimmy Durante. I knew he had an early career as a ragtime pianist. Glad to have him on this recording.

Thanks,

John
