Benny Goodman on Columbia 2927-D (1934).

Post by Viva-Tonal »

I mentioned having this early big band version of 'Moonglow' by Benny Goodman in this thread, and got a request to upload it. This is an early edition of his big band which featured trombonist Jack Teagarden.

Most unfortunately, my copy is in very poor condition, with not only scratches, there are several places as well where the playing surface of the disc has been chipped away, as may be seen here:

All of which makes playing this record a fearsome proposition, as any one of those divots could be the death of my stylus. Thankfully it survived this transfer. I had to fix two places where it repeated a groove due to the damage. Here's the digitally re-assembled recording:

And here's the flip side:

'Moonglow': matrix W.152738-1.
'Breakfast ball': matrix W.152739-2.

Both titles recorded 14th May 1934. Click on the labels to play!

Great song, and this is a great version of it. Thanks for posting. Given that the record is both worn and damaged the transfer is remakably good.

Teagarden's work on Moonglow is really nice. Hadn't heard this version before.

That record plays much better than it looks, with those grey grooves, I'd think it would be virtually unlistenable.
