If you want to learn about correct period music on the cheap, explore YouTube for starters; there are thousands of interesting recordings there. It is a fabulous resource that wasn't available or even remotely dreamed of back when most of us started. I have collected for 48 years now and am still learning about various recording artists every day, thanks to the free resources on the Internet.
Right. When I started buying 78's about 30 years ago, all you could do was do the legwork and buy the actual records blind or try to learn from a handful of reissue vinyl albums that were out at the time. But there's still tons of records "out there" - or more to buy or hear on the internet, so go and get 'em. :)

Good tip on using youtube. I have used google to help find some record info and popular artists of the era.

I don't have it yet, but it should be here in the next week or so and I'd like to get a few records for it. What do you like? What's a hard to find record? I love treasure hunts!
I'm not a Victor specialist, but if I recall, doesn't the Victor I have a 7" turntable? I think it was intended to play 7" or 8" Victor records. I think the higher models (e.g. Victor II up) were meant for the larger records. You ought to try one 10" record before buying a stack of them to see if the little motor has enough power to play completely through without winding during the song. Also, shiny acoustic records offer less drag to the motor than worn or later date 78s.
I was waiting to see someone mention this.. Yes I had my Great Grandfathers Victor I. He had marked in pencil under the turn table the date they got it. From what I recall it as Dec 1904, or close to it.. The one thing I didn't like was the small turntable, and yes 7" records were what it was designed for. I found that 10" records usually didn't get though the side without winding down.. I suppose being in the family I should have kept it, but being someone who is really interested in the quality of sound one can obtain from an acoustic machine, I have always leaned to the larger cabinet models.
