Xavier Cugat

Post by beaumonde »

Did y'all know that Cugat began his career as a violinist in Vincent Lopez's Casa Lopez Orchestra?

Here is his band in about 1940. This Conga rhythm sort of reminds me of certain sequences in Warner Bros. cartoons of the era...

I have a vague memory of reading that " Cougie" in his days as a classical violinist was an assisting artist on an Enrico Caruso concert tour. I don't think I'm making this up....To go from Caruso to Charo ( a busty young performer in the 70's) in one performing career is quite a journey.

He was also a composer, I've found a couple of his pieces used in film sountracks in the early 30's.

(btw- it's "Cugat")
