I was surprised to see an Annette Hanshaw record sell on Ebay of $173.28.

I own a hand full of her 78rpm recordings and I was going to bid on this one until it was clear that this record would sell for a very high price. I would like to think that Annette Hanshaw would be proud that she still has fans who are willing to pay so much for her records. Check out the songs and see what you think.

Annette Hanshaw, Marion Harris and Helen Kane were some of the best female vocalists of the '20s...

Yes, it is wonderful that the great Annette has found international fame and appreciation once again with new generations. It would seem that the internet, and YouTube in particular, has brought this about. However, as with all such success, the downside is the law of supply and demand which would now appear to be prohibiting many would-be buyers. I too have a small collection of her records and would like more but at these prices............

I've noticed the same. Most Annette Hanshaw records demand rather high prices, except, for some reason, Columbia 1812-D (Big City Blues/That's You, Baby). That's a 5, maybe 10 dollar record (depending on the condition), while others will easily set you back 40 to 80 dollars.

Annette was one of those talents that could only have flourished after electric recording came in: it's impossible to think of her "belting" a song into a horn.

This was the age of "crooning", and she had it down to a T. So sweet and intimate a voice: you feel as if she's singing right into your ear.

I've got Ruth Etting's copy of Guilty (record store gave it to me in a stack of 78s/DDs because they didn't want that "old crap". Have yet to see any Hanshaw "in the wild" though. Did she not sell very many records or are they all in collections/ lost to time?

From Wikipedia: Catherine Annette Hanshaw (October 18, 1901 – March 13, 1985) was an American Jazz Age singer. She was one of the most popular radio stars of the 1930s. Over four million of her records had been sold by 1934.[1] In her ten-year recording career, she recorded about 250 sides.[2] In a 1934 poll conducted by Radio Stars magazine, she received the title of best female popular singer.
