Washboard Sam and his Washboard Band on Bluebird

I just found this Bluebird record R-7501-B from 1938. It has Towboat Blues/ Don't Leave Me Here. Very hard core blues that I wasn't expecting from a washboard band. Maybe I'm used to hearing white washboard bands which are hillbilly. Has anyone ever heard of Washboard Sam? Is that a turntable on his washboard? I wonder what that's for?

That's good stuff, the other side is a great classic, too.

Marc, Washboard Sam is very fun. Another good one to watch for is Dixie Washboard Band with "Shufflin' Sam" on Columbia.

Found objects that produce a desired sound are added to the washboard "drum kit". The platter is being used as a cymbal. ;)
