Talking Machine & Music interest within the Art community

Post by Roaring20s »

:coffee:

I had an enjoyable Saturday evening here in Tucson.

The Womankraft Art Gallery held a reception this evening. As the congregants viewed the exhibit, my Talking Machine broadcast the gospel of Jazz. The preachers; Joe Venuti, Eddie Walters, Duke Ellington, Helen Kane, Sol K. Bright, Lonnie Johnson, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins called to the masses. Heads did turn to hear the word. Eyes scanned the room to seek out its messenger. Some viewed from afar. Others, moved in to see more, hear more. They all instantly confessed by expressing surprise and joy. Amen!

With a group of artists milling about, keeping it interesting was easy. Those sixty years and older were warmed buy it. The twenty to fifty range were intrigued and wanted information. I too became a curiosity as they wanted to know how I became interested in this. One young lady loved the singing of Eddie Walters and was going to Google him - nice!

A teenager ask to inspect the machine. She was stoked by this experience and asked such pertinent questions that I paused with delight. Her questions went to the transfer of sound and how it was achieved. Brava! That was the high point.

None of those I spoke with mentioned knowing any songs played. I purposely included a few that are part of the American songbook; Rum and Coca Cola, Lady Be Good, Why Don’t You Do Right, Miss Ottis Regrets, Heat Wave, You Oughta Be In Pictures, Singing in the Bathtub, and I Wanna Be Loved By You. I’m betting the sixty plus listeners knew a few.

That was fun and I will do it again!

James.

What a way to spend an autumn evening. Obviously the music and talking machine in action was a great success! Thanks for taking a slice to the public. I take it for granted myself. I am sure I would've been "Hooked" , had I been expose to a talking machine and music from days gone by. Again, many thanks for your effort, which I would assume was a labor of love. Steve
