Ooooh, baby. Some fun stuff. I've never heard of that 'Lucky' label, pressing vinyl records from original parts. Maybe they didn't last long.

There were a ton of Duke Ellington records. Found a nice group of 7 MASTER label Ellington records, near as I can tell that is the entire Ellington library on this label. Some good tunes.

This collection comprises 5000+ 78 rpm records collected over the last 60 years. Many of the records contain hand written notes in the sleeves detailing information about the artists, date, label, etc. with detailed information about where and when it was purchased and for how much. Some of these notes date to the early 1970's. The attached photo is typical of these notes, showing the record info and also the date purchased, date recorded to tape, and purchase info. The collection also included a couple hundred reels of magnetic tape with these recordings.

His specialty was jazz, blues, and swing bands, especially Glenn Miller. For many years he DJ'd jazz and swing programs on local radio stations and used these records as source material.

For the last 10 years or so, he was my friend and mentor, introducing me to many interesting facets of 78 rpm record collecting. He is gone now.

The pressing in vinyl of recordings from the shellac period is not all that rare. A number of companies did it. Even RCA and Columbia offered delux classic sets in 78 rpm vinyl alongside shellac sets after WW2. Quieter surface, but must use lightweight pickup with jewel stylus. There is no technical reason even today that metal stampers from the earliest days of recording can't be used to make fresh copies in vinyl of their contents.

^ In practice, generally no, it isn't terribly rare. In the case of something like RCA's 'Historic Masters' series of the late 40's though, those were largely dubbings and not direct pressings.

Many promo records from the later 78 era are vinyl while the commercial issues were still shellac.

Metal parts are sometimes used today to make new pressings. As long as the parts aren't damaged / corroded or what not they could make new pressings 100 years from now.

Found a Brunswick test pressing of LOVE IN BLOOM by Bing Crosby from 1934. The flip side has a song I do not recognize. Anybody know what/who this is? and how it got on the back of a Bing Crosby test pressing? The matrix number in the dead wax on the flip side is 13941. I think it is a Brunswick number but it doesn't show up in the 78DISCOGRAPHY. Looking in the ORIOLE discography, it looks like that matrix was on 9/6/1933 but is not shown. Isn't in the Vocalion discography, either.

FOUND IT! It is Conqueror 8231 - BAREFOOT BOY WITH BOOTS ON by Bill Cox recorded 9/2/1933. YeeHaa!

Still doesn't explain how it got on the flip side of a Bing Crosby test pressing...

Thanks! Cliff
