7" Copies Update

Post by donniej »

It's been a while since anyone's posted about modern reproductions. A lot of generous people have sent me discs, making up most of the library. This has been a monumental amount of work and I'm hoping for some feedback. What's good? What's not? What would you like to see more of? Any feedback is appreciated.
Thank you.

That is quite an undertaking. Thanks for your work. Any plans for something like some early 10 " Gramophone Co. (G & T) records ?

Donnie,
You have asked for feedback, so here goes... You have gotten away from what I perceived to be your original plan.... duplicating some unusual jazz, blues and dance music. Instead you have made a huge quantity of uninteresting titles which only appeal to a small audience that appreciate poorly recorded songs of historical interest. Berliners are historically interesting, but not listenable for most collectors IMO... I have a Berliner, but never listen to it. You do a great job, but no more Old Oaken Bucket type songs...

^ I would agree. While Berliners are of interest historically, and ought to be included in proportion, the method of molding records as perfected by DonnieJ is really of interest in the production of musically stouter material.

Carry on! I'm more excited to see the old-fashioned music than I am jazz music. Sousa marches are good at any time, and I'm a big ragtime fan.

The sad thing is I've never seen a Berliner, Zonophone, or pre-dog Vic--not even a pre-Patent Label Victor--in my life, and the only way I can afford them is to get a cheaper repro, which I think I will be doing soon. Machine projects interfere.

Mr. Donnie J: While the "Charleston" is significant and a fun record, please, keep the early records alive! Otherwise the old machines in about 50 years will be silent--the vinyl people will be saying "Oh, that's too much to play these precious 160-year-old records on--better digitize it all!" and we won't be able to hear Sousa's Band, George Schweinfest, Charles d'Almaine, Billy Golden, etc. the way they should be played.

I hope to order some 78s soon.

Curt,
You're 100% correct that I started with fun dance music, and I probably need to get back to it. I do love history though and jumped at the chance to copy others Berliners. Hopefully after I get caught up, others will loan me some more dance music. Some have already loaned some pretty rare discs... the Charlestons below are from my own collection (I love the song) but the rest were loaned...

Label Disc # Song Title Artist
Brunswick 2970-A The Original Charleston Isham Jones Orchestra
Victor 19671-B Charleston Paul Whiteman
Edison 52559 Kansas City Kitty Billy Murray
Vocalion 15086-A Charleston Tennessee Tooters
Perfect 14432 Charleston Blues Chasers
Gennett 5274-A Krooked Blues King Oliver and his Creole Jazz Band
Gennett 5274-B Alligator Hop King Oliver and his Creole Jazz Band
Puritan 11367-A Prince of Wails Fletcher Henderson and his Orchestra
Okeh 4841-A Barnyard Blues Original Dixieland Jazz Band

^ Didn't you say you were going to mold some electrical Diamond Discs ? Those would be fun.

I find Berliners quite interesting and all those machines stacked up in collections are barely used, now you can. And a closer look into the title list shows a lot more than the snoozers one can always complain about.

Another cool genre, if you're getting away from Berliners, might be early country records or those blues 78s we can't afford! Also, piano rags. Those aren't exactly easy to get a hold of.

I emailed you a list of what l would like to see and what l am looking for. Loaned you Hot diamond discs hoping it might inspire otbers to loan equally as nice records so I could expand my own selections. No responses but I still hold hope that other collectors might be inspired to eventually let loose of their late issue diamond discs for the short while it takes you to mould them. Mark Roberts
