Speaking of Piaf . . .

Post by jboger »

. . . although i don't have a 78 of this, I'm sure one exists:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3Kvu6Kgp88. (Trying to stay on topic.) I really don't need a tattoo of her; she's already engraved on my heart. Every time I hear this song, I stand up and salute France.

It may be hard to find a 78 rpm of this recording. The original issue of Non Je Ne Regrette Rien was in a LP recorded in the Olympia followed by the studio version, both in 1960. It was the end of the 78 rpm era, and Edith Piaf was not a best seller at that stage of her career. The Olympia record is to me one her best, with a great cover painting to match. I have the original LP, but it is available in CD, see https://www.amazon.fr/Edith-Piaf-Olympi ... af+olympia.

Carlos is of course correct. By 1960 the 78 was dead almost everywhere except for a few places in South America and Asia. These "late" 78s are sought after by collectors.

Popsike does list a 2014 sale of a Brazilian copy of this song on ebay for $71.

78 rpm also continued into the 1960's in the Soviet Union and Africa. Supposedly there's some African 78's that were produced even in the 1970's, but I haven't personally seen an example.

Thanks for all the info! This thread prompted me to listen to Milord. Always neglected, and yet it is the "fille du port" who shows kindness to the once-proud man who never took notice of her. Classic Piaf.
