It's Awkward Asking...

Post by donniej »

Dear phono friends,
Over the past year some of you have been extremely generous in loaning me discs for duplication. Some others were kind to offer me the first-chance to buy their unusual discs before listing them for sale. Others I've asked, which may be a little too forward but I've pushed this project forward every way possible. Asking to borrow rare discs from people I've never met surely causes both of us much anxiety. So I won't be asking anymore. Unfortunately it would be impossible to find or buy many of the discs in some of your collections.

If you are willing to discuss loaning discs for duplication then please PM or email me or even post so in this thread. Otherwise hopefully the admin of this forum won't mind a similar post every quarter or so to keep the project moving.

Thank you,

Don-

I will vouch for Don on loaning him rare discs anytime. Don, you can always check with me if you need something. I will send you a PM later about your latest inquiry.

Don does a great job on making these discs. I love them, I have about 5 of them and they look really nice on a early turntable. I leave one on my early Victrola IV and Victrola VI. Now I just need to find Come Josephine in my flying machine and Sleigh Ride Party on Disc.

I have Sleigh Ride on an early Columbia.

Don, are you prepared to deal with people outside the United States? I am in Britain, and I have a number of Berliners from both sides of the Atlantic which I think, judging from lists you have posted in the past, you have not yet reproduced; they include the May 1896 version of 'Auction Sale of a Piano' (George Graham and a pianist whom I take to be Fred Gaisberg) and a very early British recording, 'Tommy Atkins' sung by Tom Brice (5th September 1898, i.e. only a month after The Gramophone Company began to operate). I am not in love with the idea of sending these irreplaceable things overseas (it is my own packing and shipping skills, not yours, that I am doubting); nonetheless, I feel I should like to support your project and have decided to take the risk if you can make use of the material. I can supply a list of what I have if this is at all helpful.

Don, I thought you were able to simply use digital files now to cut a master ... ?

Yes, and for a few recordings that are virtually nonexistent I plan to do so, but its just not the same. The copies are identical to the originals and have all the same quirks, making the experience very similar to playing the original.

Donnie,

I have the only known copy of a very rare bluegrass / old-time recording by Jack Carter and the Black Mountain Boys. The songs are "Durang's Hornpipe" and "Sugarfoot Rag"=--a great sense of immediacy, a "front-porch" feel lacking in many studio recordings. The record is on vinyl 78 so it's done with great fidelity, and the only real problem is that it is cracked. You're a master of vinyl and shellac so I was hoping you could ninja it back into circulation.

Also: 1927, Supertone Electric Record of Uncle Dave Macon.

And 1927 Lincoln Record of "Nesting Time--Fox Trot" by The Ramblers. A very neat record with a Roaring-Twenties sound to it that can't be beat.

Also, I have the 12" Victrola Red Seal "Ride of the Valkyries," looks new, Stokowski and the Philadelphia Symphony, dates to 1921.

And the Empire Talking Machine's "Empire Jazz Band" playing "At The Jazz Band Ball," "Missouri Blues," "Lassus Trombone," and "The Alcoholic Blues," all 1919 instrumentals. They are in great shape and the Empire Talking Machine Company only lasted for a few years--releasing very few jazz records! (Label scans are OBLIGATORY because the labels are way cool!)

PM me and let me know yes or no before I send you the discs.

Title suggestions I don't have: 1927, "Hallelujah," Nat Shilkret. 1931, "Smile, Darn Ya, Smile." Billy Cotton.
