Fred Hall and His Sugar Babies - Speed Question

Post by bart1927 »

I've just digitized Radiex 1449 with Fred Hall and His Sugar Babies playing "And I Don't Mean Maybe" and "Dew, Dew Dewy Day" under the pseudonym of the Cotton Blossom Orchestra and the White Way Orchestra.

First I transferred side A at 78.26 rpm. It sounded good to me, perhaps a bit fast, but hardly off key. But when I transferred side B I noticed that the arrangement was almost one semitone higher than the other versions I have of the song (Nat Shilkret, Ben Selvin and Lyst Reynolds' Logola Orchestra). It wasn't really off key or anything, but I just thought it was really peculiar. So I transferred it again, this time at 74.5 rpm. And, just for fun, I also transferred side A again. It sounds a bit more relaxed now, and Arthur Fields sounds more like himself again.

So, what do you think? 78.26 rpm (or slightly above) or 74.5?
