Just brought home an Edison C250 with a bunch of Diamond Disc records, including 52088 the last acoustic release, featuring Vernon Dalhart singing THE MISSISSIPPI FLOOD and THE WRECK OF NUMBER NINE. Pretty cool.

I adore Dalhart's DD version of "The Wreck of The Number Nine". It's most definitely on my most wanted list.

Humorously ironic that Dalhart would mark the end of something...

Truth be known Dalhart probably sold more 78's than Caruso

^ I could believe that. He recorded much more than Caruso, and also under a number of pseudonyms. The number of 'sides' Dalhart recorded numbers in the thousands.

Vernon Dalhart recorded hundreds of songs on almost every label. He was probably the most popular artist at the beginning of the 20th Century. He probably sold more recordings than Caruso, but he also died in poverty is the story that I have read.

Dalhart and Caruso were both great in their genres of music.

In the early 20th century, Billy Murray owns the Most Popular crown. They both recorded thousands of sides for any label that would employ them. Dalhart came in as Murray was fading.
