You could pay to have yourself recorded- Columbia did quite a few of these.
Hollis Davenny was a Broadway singer, he was in one of the opening casts of BLOSSOM TIME in 1923. He and Gertrude Lang toured in a revival of THE STUDENT PRINCE in 1925, so I think the record is from around that time.
It might be at Davenny & Lang made this record hoping that Columbia might sign them to a contract.

Here is an earlier version of the label from
Columbia. You can often find personal recordings from corporations sending out messages or a glee club from a University.

That record was never commercially issued, nor were any of these Banjo Orchestra sides for either Victor or Columbia according to the info I have. In fact, this disc isn't even listed! It's a very interesting find indeed. The Columbia Personals were pressed in limited quantities for very local consumption and paid for by the artist. The Victor sides all show as "rejected".
Walter Gustav "Gus" Haenschen changed his name later on due to lingering anti German sentiment after WW1 when he worked with Brunswick. The name Carl Fenton came from Fenton, Mo.
These personal Columbias are prewar from around the 1910 era.

Haenschen recorded as Fenton, but he never changed his name. When the band made appearances in ballrooms ti was led by Reuben "Rudy" Greenberg and after Haenschen left Brunswick in 1927 Greenberg bought the rights to the Fenton name and in 1932 he legaly changed his name. Haenschen continued to work under his own name
