Gus Arnheim and His Orchestra ~ My Troubles Are Over

Post by bart1927 »

Here's one of my latest acquisitions. Gus Arnheim and His Ambassador Hotel Cocoanut Grove Orchestra playing "My Troubles Are Over". While it's a great arrangement, the recording itself doesn't sound that great, it sounds more like a Victor Batwing from 1925 than a 1929 Okeh. I assume it's caused by bad acoustics. It was recorded January 17, 1929 in Los Angeles. Other recordings made in the same month suffer from the same problem.

OE record has more reverberation and more top end than I'd expect from an early VE. Also sounds better if you turn up the bass a smidge.

Good record.

It certainly is a great record. I compared the sound of this Okeh to that of an early Victor Electric, because several of those have the same sonic characteristics: very little bass, lots of reverb and sometimes a slightly distorted sound (for instance Victor 19809 and 19756). I assume this was because electrical recording was still new, so recording engineers were still experimenting with different setups, trying to get everything to sound right.

Once you hear the Ted Weems recording of "My troubles are over", every other version sounds less than stellar to my ears. Still, it's a great song no matter the performer.

You're welcome! It's quite hard to find, and when you do happen upon a copy, it's usually rather expensive, and the same goes for other Arnheim's on Okeh, especially the hot ones.
