I also agree that this audio file seems a total fake, and not even a good one.

Even with today technology recording the boom of a cannon and shortly thereafter the tweet of a bird would pose serious problems with the dynamic range, go figure in 1918.

Where were these recordings, during the 100-years long debate about the "Shell Gas Bombardment"'s authenticity? Nowhere I've seen them mentioned.

By the way all witnesses stressed out that the Great War "didn't sound like a Hollywood movie". I wasn't there so I will never know what they exactly meant with that, but what I hear in this fake clip closely reminds me of Hollywood movies.
