"Marta" Opera
Does anyone know whether this almost forgotten opera by Flotow is available on DVD, preferably Region 2 for the UK.

Yeh, it's on DVD. Can't tell if it's R2, though.
Multi region players, good.

I wonder if it has ever been completely recorded in German, rather than the Italian translation.

This opera may be almost forgotten these days, but it has one of the most famous arias in all opera: The famous "M'appari" and sung by all the great tenors including Caruso.

And also a soprano aria, 'Letzte Rose, wie magst du', usually known by the English title 'The last rose of summer', which has long been a favourite for operatic sopranos; I have just bought a copy of Olimpia Boronat's 1904 version. The words are translated from the Irish poet Thomas Moore (1779–1852), and the tune is a lightly ornamented version of a traditional Irish melody.marcapra wrote:This opera may be almost forgotten these days, but it has one of the most famous arias in all opera: The famous "M'appari" and sung by all the great tenors including Caruso.

I have recordings by Patti, Tetrazzini, Galli-Curci and unusually Maria Barrientos, beautifully sung in Italian.Menophanes wrote:And also a soprano aria, 'Letzte Rose, wie magst du', usually known by the English title 'The last rose of summer', which has long been a favourite for operatic sopranos; I have just bought a copy of Olimpia Boronat's 1904 version. Probably not top quality, but only $5. Probably R1, but might be region free.

Re: "Marta" Opera
There's a lot of delightful music in this opera.
Caruso's two versions of "M'appari" are so well-known and loved as to be considered "hors concours," but he recorded several other selections from the opera in duet and ensemble, my favourites of those being "Solo, profugo" with the bass Marcel Journet, and the "Dormi pur" section from the Quartetto Notturno. Sublime lyrical singing here.
