Edison cylinder # 8118, "In the good old summertime" on Ebay

Post by EdisonSquirrel »

I placed a few bids on Billy Murray's 2-minute Edison cylinder of "In the good old summertime," but I know that I stand no chance of winning it. It will be interesting to see what this record goes for.

Here's another 2-minute cylinder worth watching--Billy Murray's "You're a grand old rag" on Edison 9256 released in April 1906.

Both cylinders were at $12.50 when I last checked but the bidding can go out of sight in the last few seconds as I have seen happen on ebay items I wanted.

I have the "In the good old Summertime" Cylinder being sold here,Edison 8118 and the singer is not Murray, but William Redmond. However this is one of the quirks in Edison's numbering of two minute cylinders. Redmond originally recorded 8118, in 1902. Billy Murray came along in 1905 and also recorded "In the Good Old Summertime", but the powers that be, obviously kept the same ID Number on the record as 8118. This makes things very confusing at times.

Yes, my copy of "Edison Cylinder Records, 1889-1912" by Allen Koenigsberg lists the record as recorded by William Redmond--there is no mention of Billy Murray. My impression is that the rerecording of a song by another artist and keeping the same serial number was rampant during the brown wax era. I know that there are some 2-minute cylinders that have the older numbering on them, including some that are numbered in the 1500s, which would make them easy to confuse with the early BAs based on serial number.
