Sophie Tucker - Rare Records?

Post by Victrolacollector »

I love Sophie Tucker recordings. Sophie has a voice and classic style all her own. It seems hard to find any cylinders with Sophie Tucker. Why are they hard to find? I have the Some of these Days cylinders by Berlin and a reproduction copy of her unreleased copy of Phoebe Jane. I would like to find others.

They're hard to find because they didn't sell well. Her cylinders are her first recordings and she was really only regionally known (if that). Not to mention by the time she was making her first records, most Edison cylinder machine owners were rural, most urban music lovers had changed formats to disc records. I can't imagine many farmers running over to the seed shop to buy Sophie's latest, they likely didn't even know who she was.

I had not heard of Sophie Tucker until I read your post. My knowledge is not great on these things though - or anything in particular really :(

Anyway, I found this article and thought it may be of interest - I thought it was interesting anyway.

Looking on Popsike suggests that her Okeh recordings are much easier to find.

If you want to see and hear some great music and her story you should buy the DVD "THE OUTRAGEOUS SOPHIE TUCKER." Great documentary!

Here are the Berlin Phono Works reissues for those who'd like to give them a listen. :)

Sophie Tucker made other great hits as well...

Knock Wood
Missouri Joe
Rueben Rag
My Husband’s in the City

I think Knock Wood and Missouri Joe really are awesome songs as well. Sophie has that style, she can really change that tempo, for which was not that common back in the early 1900’s.
