First Recovered Original Tinfoil Recording

Post by rodpickett »

APS members will enjoy reading a well-researched article in the June issue of The Antique Phonograph regarding the recovery of the tinfoil recording known as the “St. Louis Tinfoil” circa June 1878.

As an added feature, Quick Response (QR) codes are imbedded within the article so the actual sound files can be heard via a scan your mobile device.

The article includes so much more than just the recording. ;) The recording itself has been laboriously restored to even out the wildly varying speed resulting from uneven cranking. When initially digitized it was "played" at a constant speed, which resulted in extreme distortion and waver. With those variations corrected we can now hear it as it was recorded 141 years ago.

In addition, the only known photograph of a tinfoil exhibition is featured -- in full-size 3D stereoview no less. Looking at that detailed photograph with a stereoviewer (or 'free-viewing' it without any equipment), while listening to the original tinfoil recording, is as close to time travel as we could hope for.

And that's just one article in the June issue. There are 11 more.

Thanks Rod and Rene, I look forward to the June issue, and every other new issue for that matter. I can't fathom why anyone who is a fan of this hobby, wouldn't think becoming a member isn't a priority. The cost is less than what many of us are willing to pay for that interesting gizmo to set inside of the turntable compartment of our favorite upright disc machine.

Best,

I hate to ask, but what are you talking about?

I apologize for steering the thread any further off course. My curiosity got the best of me.

Not my article, though of course I love the topic! It's by David Giovannoni.
