Bolden Movie in a Theater near you!

Post by edisonphonoworks »

This movie is about Jazzlegend Charles "Buddy Bolden". The recording scene; the movie company rented myself, blanks and the studio recorder. I went back to Wilmington N.C. 3 times to help with the scene of the legendary cylinder recording. It is interesting to note, that the band may have actually made commercial records in it's early days for the Louisiana Phonograph Co. in the mid 1890's, before the Oscar Zahn recording. I have two cylinders of the sound track from the first filming. One is the song they record in the recording scene; the other is the actors playing instruments, playing along with the sound track to make the first version of the recording scene. Anthony Mackie played the first Bolden in the movie, and on the cylinders I have. I have watched the film already, I was expecting a little longer movie. It may be hard to follow a little, however it is taken from a perspective of Bolden in the asylum, recollecting his past, as he hears Louis Armstrong playing on the radio. Gary Carr is Bolden in the final version of the movie, replacing Mackie. The first version of the movie was shot in 35mm Panavision by Vilmos Zsigmond. The final version presented in theaters is in digital.

It must have been a very interesting experience.
Also that you, a knowledgable enthusiast, provided a level of accuracy not often rendered.

I intend to see this movie.

Thanks for the post and the links.
James.
