Where is my Meyer - German Charleston.....?!

Post by Odeon »

The titel had big success in 1927 Germany - recorded by many bands.
Over the time I learned that the tune had been also recorded in the USA.

So I posted a german Band version (Efim Schachmeister and his Orchestra) in comparing with two Bands from the USA on YT.
I only own the german record, the Nat Shilkret and Sam Lanin records are "stolen" from the Net....

Anyone with other versions recorded in the USA ?
- I would love to hear them

"Where is my Meyer - Was macht der Maier am Himalaya" was one of THE
Hits in Germany in 1927. Almost every Orchestra recorded the tune, composed by Anton
Profes with words by Fritz Rotter and Otto Stransky. On many german records the tune is
described as Charleston or "Charleston - Onestep".

Anton Profes, born 26. März 1896 in Leitmeritz, at that time in Austria, today Czech Republic studies music in Prague, since 1916 he as active as a Bandleader in Germany. From 1921 on he was a full-time composer. From 1930 on he composed for a lot movies the soundtrack. Even in the 1950´s he did the music to the famous "Sissi" movies with Romy Schneider. Profes died 1976 in Salzburg. Austria.

Fritz Rotter (* 3. März 1900 in Wien; † 11. April 1984 in Ascona) worked first in cabarets like the „Simplicissimus in vienna, from 1920 he worked in Berlin. He did the words for a lot of well known hits in germany like: Wenn der weiße Flieder wieder blüht; Veronika, der Lenz ist da; Ich küsse ihre Hand, Madame; Heut war ich bei der Frieda (das tu ich morgen wieda); Heut ist die Käthe etepetete; Wieso ist der Walter so klug für sein Alter.
Because of his jew origins he emigrated in 1933. First to Austria, then via England in the USA. Here he worked in Hollywood, for example with Fritz Lang. After war he returned to Europe, composing for movies.

Otto Stransky (* 15. Mai 1889 in Brünn; † 23. November 1932 in Berlin) composed Operettas and Revue music in Berlin, he died 1932 in a car crash.

Efim Schachmeister, born 22.Juli 1894 in Kiew, studied from 1910 to 1913 music at the "Sternschen Konservatorium" in Berlin.
Since c. 1915 he played violin with the "Zigeuner-Kapelle Popescu".
From 1923 on he had his own Orchestra and recorded for the german "Grammohon". He recorded also under the pseudonyms "Sascha Elmo" and "Joan Florescu".
After a Tourne in 1923 he played in Berlin in the Hotel "Exelsior" as well as in the Dance Halls Barberina, Palais de Danse and Pavillon Mascotte.

Because of his jew origins he left in 1933 Germany for Argentina. He died in 1944, only aged 50 in Buenos Aires.

Langsam krochen viele Wochen.
Keine Kunde kam von unserem Maier
Manche Nichte schrieb Gedichte.
Jeder schreit: „Der Maier tut mir leid!

IS this about Hans Meyer who was one of the first to climb several peaks in the Humalayas ...like in 1889 or so....or someone emulating him? Interesting post indeed!

I don´t think it is about Hans Meyer....

With the english words of the tune our Meyer is called "Friedrich Wilhelm". Friedrich or Wilhelm are names very common in germany, like Hans :P

I did a little research about famous Himalya trips in the 1920´s - Nothing that would fit with the tune. So, I think, this is one more fo these 1920´s nonsense tunes....
