Can i fill degrading plaster on the inside of blue amberola cylinders?

Post by phonograph guy3435 »

I bought a cylinder and it has little plaster left and I fear it might break so if someone could please inform me on this that would be great! if you wanted to know the cylinder is called "on the banks of the Wabash far away" Archibald and chorus. also, who is Archibald? :D

As to adding plaster, I've never heard of anyone doing it to any great success. Since this is the state song of Indiana, I would imagine that it's not rare. I would just look for a better copy... perhaps in Indiana! :D

There is a video from Brett Hurt describing how to do this I will attach it if possible to this thread. Dyslexic Genius Hurt on YouTube #1632.

I was told by a knowledgeable collector that pre-mixed drywall spackling works well and dries relatively fast. You need a spare mandrel wrapped in Saran wrap or a condom to keep it from sticking and forming correctly. I haven't tried this, but was told it worked easier than mixing plaster...

I know nothing at all about cylinders.

However, I have had excellent results repairing other crumbly things using powdered drywall/plaster repair compounds (Pro Bond/SheetRock 90 .. comes to mind, but I don't think these are the right names exactly) by mixing them with a good quality white glue and a good quality primer such as Zinsser. Much more durable. Better bonding. Better adhesion between crumbly bits. Better finish.
