None of us were born knowing a thing about any of this stuff. You're learning, so take comfort in that.
Here's one of the free Introductory articles on the Antique Phonograph Society website which shows all the basic types of cylinder records you're likely to encounter:

You have two options, the safe one and the dangerous one:
Safe option: try to look for Edison pressings of the recording
Dangerous option: sand the mandrel (this is a real practice but it is horrible for your machine)

"Sanding the mandrel?" This is perhaps your idea of humor?MisterGramophone wrote: ↑Tue Feb 06, 2024 12:23 pm Try sanding the mandrel, if it only shrank a little bit, this should work.
I've suspected this member was a troll, and I've done my best to ignore his posts, but posting rubbish like this is really beyond the pale. There may be newcomers who wouldn't know better.

Happy to hear that! Sometimes celluloid can be tricky to get on the mandrel.phonograph guy3435 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 06, 2024 1:38 pm this is my one and only phonograph and I'm guarding it with my life . but I found out the cylinder was actually a very good condition 4 min (US everlasting?). anyways i can play it and it plays great
