Painting Edison Horn for Gem Phonograph

Post by 7309 »

I have just finished restoring an Edison two piece morning glory horn for my Gem phonograph. The horn had no finish when I got it and I have completed all the repairs and am ready to put a finish color on it. Does anyone know what would be the best paint to duplicate the red color of the original horn? Thanks in advance.

I think you are looking for an iridescent look. If the repaired horn does not have a uniform color, I would paint it a silver or white. Next I would spray it with a tinted clear coat. You should get that see through look. Jerry

Here is what I use:
1. I prime the horn.
2. Paint the horn silver using hobby spray enamel, like Testor's.
3. After the horn is uniformly painted silver, then I use Testor's clear red. It is a dead ringer for these early translucent ...horns. Use a few thin coats, not a thick one.
4. After the paint is dry and uniform, then you can stripe it. There are several methods, but my favorite is 3-M ⅛" gold ...metallic striping tape.
5. These paints can be bought at any good craft store or a model shop.
