Adjusting Victor Spring Balanced Lids

Hello! Just thought I'd share my knowledge of these balanced lids. If you have one that is squeaky or too tight, take a size 15 hex key and use a ratchet to adjust the nuts on the spring brackets. Loosen about a quarter turn and try again. Continue until the lid is to your liking. If it's too loose, follow the same procedure but instead tighten it. Hope this helps someone!

No problem! It seems to be a seldom-discussed aspect of repair, and since mine was so tight I figured it out myself. Thought I'd spare people in the future .

Thanks for the info. I will put that in the proverbial tool box for later usage.

The adjustment of the lid support is covered in the 8-35 user’s manual as well as in the service instructions issued to the dealer by Victor. Here are some pages from the 8-35 manual.

Here is Victor Service Bulletin No. 12 from September 12, 1929
Victor (Now RCA Victor) provided excellent dealer support..
The information is still useful today!

Are these Victor Service Bulletins available in reprint? If not, would you consider making reprints?
They look like a great resource.

Hi Ken,

Some have been reprinted, the directions for adjusting the first style changer appear in the appendix to Bob Baumbach’s Look for the Dog, but most issues of these helpful Service Bulletins have not been reprinted. I suspect the reason is that the reprinting efforts would far exceed what any reasonable collector might pay for the reprints. Everything should be free, right? If you are diligent you will eventually locate these pamphlets on that well know auction site. They were sent to dealers individually ( some had periodic revisions ) and many were bound into a small multi ring “LEFAX” binder. by the dealer. That keyword may yield some results.

You will find some information reprinted in the RCA “Red Books” and the Riders radio servicing manuals.

Feel free to contact me with questions.

Mark

Here is a photo of a LEFAX binder. The Victor service bulletins came pre-punched to fit this pocket sized notebook.
