Would someone please explain this brake mechanism? Spring?

Post by steambc »

I have a few questions about the brake mechanism on my VV-IX. I understand how the brake works with the leather pad, but what role does the left-most "Y" yoke play? THe one with the bullet-shaped knob on it.

I'm not sure how that is supposed to properly interact with the reproducer arm (sorry if I'm using wrong terminology).

Also, should there be an extension spring between the points I've indicated? Thanks for any info!

Yes, you are missing a spring. See attached photo.

The pin attached to the tone arm should sit between the two arms of the fork. Then place the needle and soundbox at the end of the record, where you want the brake to kick in, then, using the small knob on the right hand arm of the fork, you move the fork until the left hand arm of the fork is touching the pin on the arm. Then pull the handbrake lever (on the right of your photo)towards you to release the brake, and at the end of the record the automatic brake will operate.

Thanks Phono!

How would you characterize the strength of the spring? Yours looks pretty strong. Does anyone make proper replacement springs?

Steambc,
I bought an IX a couple of weeks ago and the trip arm was broken off but spring was still intact. I already had another complete mechanism.
If you will PM me your address, I’ll mail you the spring.

Looking again at your brake, it's apparent that the long lever that the spring attaches to has to be moved so that it sits on the other side of the upturned projection on the base plate. To do this, slide the clip off the top of the pivot point, lift off the fork and the lever, and reassemble in the same order, but with the lever in the correct position. Be very careful with the fibre washers that sit between the fork, lever, and base plate. They are extremely fragile, snap easily and are not easily replaced.
