I have the upper spring out. The spindle seems like it has an upper wider part that needs to be removed to allow access to the second spring case. There is a hole in the side of the spindle, does it require an Allen key? if so, what size?
Maybe a picture would help

Some of those spring barrels have the ratchet gear on the other side with a pin through it that you have to drive out to get the shaft removed from the other end. You have that covered up in your picture, but I would clean that end up and see if there's a pin or screw on the other side. It's been a long time since I've worked on one of those 2 spring motors like that. Good luck with it now. It looks like you are gaining on it some, anyway....
