Cleaning up Columbia N upper works

I've got a Columbia N with fairly rough upper works. It appears that a past owner lived near an ocean due to the corrosion seen. What is a good common cleaner and would you use 0000 steel wool or something a little tamer?

Thanks,
Scott

Scott,

Maybe a picture of the upper works would give someone a suggestion as how to best clean it up.

Type N top works are cast aluminum, which is softer than steel. Even with the fine polishing grade 0000 steel wool, i would personally avoid doing more damage to the top works. Use the paste version of FLITZ, available at your local Advance Auto Parts. The liquid FLITZ is gentle enough for paint and even decals if used carefully but the paste FLITZ has got more "oomph" and can cut through a lot without damaging metal. Not recommended for paint however.
