Cleaning HMV reentrant grill cloth

Anyone have any proven tips to remove a (recent) oil stain from a late 1920’s HMV reentrant gold grille cloth?
Thoughts appreciated

try dusting it with chalk or talcum to absorb the oil, then you will brush and vacuum to remove the powder

The best tip I can give is to leave it alone. Almost all of that cloth has become extremely delicate and will most likely disintegrate with any cleaning attempts.

Although in some respects I agree with Jerry, if it were mine, I'd try to remove it (with the frame) and blot it with Naptha (Lighter Fluid). It would be risky, but I can't think staying soaked in oil would do it any good in the long term.

The grille cloth was cleaned with smoke sponge and white sprit by professional textile restorers, Janie Lightfoot Textiles LLP, London NW10 4JG. There's a slight ghosting of the oil marks - but am very happy with this result. So nothing's impossible!

I decided to answer my own question and it looks like these might be very useful for restorations... Also called chemical sponges although they don't contain any chemicals...
