Hi All -

I am inquiring to see what everyone has done to remove the old finish off of a Victor Back Bracket. I tried paint stripper, but had no luck. I wanted to et comments before getting more aggressive. DO I go to something like an Aircraft Stripper ir do I just need to sand or brut force it off?

Not specificaly Victor parts but in similar cases the best method I found was wire brushing. Even that took a fair amount of effort.

A sand blaster loaded with something less aggressive like walnut shells would be my choice of weapons. Jerry B.

if it's that hard to remove,,, I would just sand it lightly,, put body filler in the rough area, sand again, prime it and sand it a couple times to fair it out and paint it.. then your ready for the decal..

When I strip Edison bedplates (much the same finish) I use a big drill press and a soft brass bristled wire wheel. It's not very safe; a bench-grinder would make a better mount for the wire wheels. That can take the finish off quickly without hurting the iron.

I use a wire wheel on a bench grinder to completely strip and then re-paint and finish accordingly, if they're lightly pitted I'll use 2-3 coats of primer sanded heavily between each coat until smooth to the touch, one heavily pitted one I had I used marine jb weld as a filler before priming and painting.
