Problems with a Brunswick Panatrope Seville

Hello! I have been an amateur phonograph collector for some years, owning a VV-405 that has given me no cause for complaint. I recently purchased a Brunswick Panatrope Seville in an all around good condition. It seems to have the following mechanical problems however:

1. The motor will not stay wound, that is after one has wound it up and let go of the handle, it violently spins back (rather like a problem with a crank automobile, though not liable to break your arm!)

2. I cannot get at the motor because I cannot remove the handle. I spin it counter-clockwise and it simply spins around without coming off. I sprayed a bit of WD-40 at the join between the motor and the handle, but to no avail.

Any advice or suggestions?

Sounds like the ratchet has given up the ghost. In my experience, it's very unusual to have anything go wrong with a Brunnie motor (apart from an occasional spring) as they were such good quality.
I wonder if you could remove the turntable, undo the mounting screws, and slide the motor to the left just enough to get your hand down & hold the ratchet gear or something while you unscrew the handle?
If that fails, you may have to also unscrew the motor from the black metal mounting plate along with the speed control, to give you enough room to get in there. Doing this, you might need a second person to hold onto the crank handle, so the motor doesn't drop down onto the horn when it lets go of the metal plate.
Had the machine been a console, you could have removed the albums & reached up through the slots to get to the motor, but you cant with a upright unfortunately.

Wonderful! Thanks for helping me get that handle off. Is there any way to fix the rachet or is this better sent off to someone who might repair it?

I guess it really depends on what part of the ratchet is broken, and how mechanically mind and handy you are.
If you cant duplicate or repair the damaged part, you could either buy a replacement part from, or have it fixed by George Vollema of Great Lakes Antique Phonographs.
George actually has complete scans of all the different Brunswick motor parts catalogues which will help in identifying the correct motor & part number here- (I'm pretty sure your machine will have either a Type B, C, D or E motor)

And you can contact George regarding parts & repairs here-
