What tint of Shellac to use on smooth oak horn?

Post by kiwiatlarge »

Advice appreciated. I need to varnish over a decal on a smooth wood oak horn (see picture). Brett Hurt and others seem to recommend amber tinted shellac. Any other suggestions or advice - votes for clear shellac? The horn has been repaired and refinished by a prior owner.

As you were advised - amber/orange shellac is correct for a period correct appearance. Clear shellac does not provide an aged look.
