It does look like a wet towel or similar object was left there. I have used a product made by Magic American Products of Cleveland, OH called "Furniture White Ring Remover." It has worked well on the typical rings made by planters and wet drinking glasses that were set upon the lids.

The owner did say he thinks a doily was once there and may have been wet. I have read that people have had success removing stains like this with an iron and a cloth, but it is hard to believe that it is that easy. Thanks for the reply.
