Hear experimental recordings from Bell's Volta Lab

Post by VintageTechnologies »

"In 2011, scholars from three institutions—National Museum of American History Curators Carlene Stephens and Shari Stout, Library of Congress Digital Conversion Specialist Peter Alyea and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Scientists Carl Haber and Earl Cornell—came together in a newly designed preservation laboratory at the Library of Congress to recover sound from those recordings made more than 100 years ago."

"Now, through a collaborative project with the Library of Congress and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the mystery of what is on these recordings is being unraveled. To date, the team has successfully submitted six discs—all experimental recordings made by the Volta Laboratory Associates between 1881 and 1885—to the sound recovery process."

I am posting some links where you can read more and hear the sounds. The videos on YouTube have captions to read what was spoken.

I put this together when the findings were released, if you want to listen to them all in one fell swoop.

No captions, though.

I used this link to prepare the video: http://bio16p.lbl.gov/
The audio clips are presented in the same order as they appear on the above website. Corresponding photos of the discs being played are also included in this video. This is really some amazing stuff!
