Manual of analogue audio restoration techniques

Post by 2Bdecided »

The British Library has made available an impressive work by Peter Copeland, not only filled with detail about getting the best out of old cylinders and discs, but also explaining how they were recorded in the first place.

Of particular interest are the following sections:

3.7 - how we should be wary of computers ;)
4 - grooves and how to play them!
4.6 - history of cutting methods and groove shape
4.8 - why thorn/fibre needles work so well
4.9 - why steel needles are terrible
5.2 - history of speed
6.2 onwards - history of equalisation
6.13 history of cutter heads
12 - acoustic recordings
12.6 - HMV acoustic recording equipment
13.10 - costs down the ages

The history of recorded sound is woven into several of the chapters. If you have no interest in the headline topic, but great interest in the history of recording, this is still well worth a look.
