The first 'British' Berliners were recorded in Autumn 1898 by The Gramophone Company (HMV) , with the first British catalogue published in November 1898 containing a mix of British and American recordings.

As to the company name, it went something like this;
The Gramophone Company 1898 - 1899
The Gramophone Company Limited 1899 - 1900
The Gramophone & Typewriter Company Limited 1901 - 1907
The Gramophone Company Limited 1907 - 1925

You'll find a PDF of 'Voices of The Past', which covers all voice related material from G&T here :http://archive.org/details/voicesofthepast017049mbp. I've also written a brief article on the early G&T/HMV numbering systems here: http://www.78rpmcommunity.com/blogs/201 ... -gramophon, and I'm trying to compile a listing which includes the non voice material here: http://www.78rpmcommunity.com/wiki/view ... -listings.
