Eldridge Johnson is said to have disapproved of G&T's refusal to copy the original Victrola design, but the Sheraton was an expensive limited production designed to resemble a piece of 18th century furniture and has aged more gracefully.
I was serious when I suggested taking it with you. In Europe you could indeed ask, and probably get, more money for it.

As some posters have indicated, this is a really rare machine, the HMV, British equivalent of the Pooley flat top, made in 1906. I'd be surprised if my example is not the only one in America. It also needs a new home. Here is more information on the machine from Proudfoot's book His Master's Gramophone, underscoring the importance of this model. For you collectors who have "everything," I'm pretty confident you don't have this one. $700 and it's yours.

That's about GBP£540. Here in the UK there would be a queue of willing buyers. Why so little interest in the USA? This is a historically important machine.

I think it is mostly ignorance about any machine that is not made in the US. The vast majority of US collectors are only interested in the US brands, and only care to learn about Edison, Victor and the likes.

Not necessarily. It's also a question of room and shipping- the USA is a huge country and shipping something domestically this size here can easily double the price. Our internal shipping prices are beyond stupid- it would now cost me more to ship this from DC to Oregon than it cost me to ship a large Edison upright from Oregon USA to Taiwan last year!

It depends on how you do the shipping.

Anyhow, I am probably moving to Europe full-time and need to find this piece a new home.
