Pretty sure it's been refinished and the felt replaced. The horn also looks suspiciously like a reproduction from Peru to me. I know, I own one. They're fantastic horns but they are not original.

That machine when first listed a month or so ago was offered in a regular auction and it “sold” for 3100... it was then relisted with the 3600 buy it now price. I asked about that and the seller just said that the sale had fallen through... I also asked him a couple times about the finish, whether it had been redone... he claimed ignorance about antiques and also said that he’d owned this for 50 years and had bought it from someone who had acquired it from his/her grandfather.

It’s overpriced, especially in that condition, which looks badly redone.

This is probably silly, but the seller's presentation in all caps alone would be enough to turn me away. I've never bought anything from an all-caps listing that didn't turn out to be problematic.

Definitely refinished; crank doesn't look correct either although that is not a big issue - but for $3600 one would certainly expect something much closer to perfection.

I don't know if this has its original finish or not. It has quite a shine to it, but it's possible some type of oil (possibly lemon oil?) has been applied to doll it up. It looks to be a later production model--Victor V, Type C--with the larger case and semi-automatic brake. According to the Victor Data Book, the Exhibition sound box for this series was eventually supplanted by the Victor No. 2.

In any event, it's been up for sale for several months now, and it might be worth it to contact the seller --
