SOLD: Edison Class S 2 Clip with Recs, Extras $1500

Post by gramophone-georg »

Here's a really nice c.1898/99 Edison Class S 2 Clip Standard phonograph "bundle", consisting of:

*Edison Standard Phonograph and cabinet S/N S15515

*Correct early Automatic reproducer with "blank" handle, Mica Monster modified with a special gasket as discussed here:
http://forum.talkingmachine.info/viewto ... +automatic

*Correct Automatic recorder

*Shaver with good cutter

*Carriage mounted record brush

*Gem style conical horn, as originally supplied

*Correct early H&S rear mount 18" brass horn and crane

*28" Recording horn with crane extension

*Tiz It horn connector

*30 nice brown wax cylinders, no mold issues. Some appear to possibly be home recordings

*5 new light brown wax blanks in boxes

* Length of new belting material from Mica Monster

*Reproduced publications: Form 307, "Directions For Setting Up And Operating The Standard Edison Phonograph" and "How To Make Records At home With An Edison Phonograph"

*I'll throw in an additional five black wax records for listening and demonstration if desired.

The lid has a barely perceptible repaired crack on the front (not the top, surprisingly!) and the crank handle was once split in two and glued back together. The top clips are slightly "floppy" due to 120 year old springs in the clips, I'm sure. This machine should always be carried by the bottom and never by the handle anyways.

Full disclosure: I've had this machine a very long time but I'm not a cylinder guy. I've maybe played it a handful of times and haven't played the majority of the brown records for fear of wearing them.

I've never used the shaver, and I've never used the recorder. This has basically been a very long term project of accumulating correct parts for the base machine (mainly from the good folks on the forum here)- for what has basically wound up always being a display piece. I have a suspicion that the nickle parts have been renickled at some time in the past- either that or this thing was pampered and packed away for a very long time!

Asking $2500 for the whole package. I would consider packing and shipping via Greyhound depot to depot for this price in USA. Otherwise, perhaps the Jerry B Express could be an option.

I don't mind packing and shipping by other methods or overseas at buyer's exact cost.

Please note: price is a starting point, and negotiable. Look at what all you get with this package deal! Willing to scratch my head over a partial trade for a nice VV 8-9 or Columbia 8-10, or may trade for an exceptional Victor III...

Always looking for nice red label Victor Monarch and Deluxe label records as well.

Offers?

Well, let's see. I could go for the huge payday on Etsy by upcycling this into a humidor, three hanging lamps, 35 pencil holders and make something steampunk out of the remains... and steampunk sells...

OR...

I could DROP THE PRICE to $1750.00

Which should I do???

Absolute final price drop to $1600 plus ship before it goes to other venues. This is a super nice complete package and I'd like to see it stay in the "family".

George, I have a Columbia Viva Tonal 810 that I would willing to sell at a reasonable price. It has been gone through mechanically and works great. I haven't done anything to the cabinet. It is complete. Let me know if you are interested and then I'll send some pics if so. Jerry could haul it to Oregon in Aug. if you decide to buy. Marc.

I would seriously consider helping with shipping costs on this... the machine and horns could go Parcel Select and the records and blanks Media to keep costs down.

Yes, I know how to pack phonographs and records to arrive damage free as anyone who has purchased from me can tell you (unless there's a disaster out there I'm not aware of.. ). I'll take the mechanism out of the case to pack separately and double box the brown wax, etc. Buy it now before the summer heat waves hit!

I would also consider covering delivery via the Jerry B Express to Union or APS.

I forgot to add that there is an Edison "How To Make Records At Home With An Edison Phonograph" booklet reprint included as well. You could be the next Phil Spector or George Martin! :D

Nice set up George. I did not realize that the early square cases came originally with the 10 in. horns. I learn something every day. I will have to get a couple. Tom

This is what I've been told by several experienced collectors so it must be true... right? And the little cone horn did come with it when I got it years ago. It also had the crane holders on the back, so one thing led to another...

Hey, wait a sec... don't you need another one?
